Reverend Mary Martin

Reverend Mary Martin hales from the piedmont triad area of North Carolina.

She and her family have lived in eastern NC since 2017. She divides her time between her full time gig as a board certified multi-faith clinical chaplain and being our part time minister at UUFNB.

Education & Training

Rev. Mary earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She went on to study at Pfeiffer University where she earned a master’s degree in Practical Theology with concentrations in Pastoral Care and Counseling. She completed her graduate theological studies course work at Wesley Theological Seminary and also completed a course of study at Duke Divinity school.

Since her graduation(s), Mary has continued her studies to include grief counseling and church trauma.

The heart of the matter:

Mary is passionate about inclusion and equity for all.  In 2019, Mary left her previous denomination in protest of their lack of inclusion and refusal to celebrate LGBTQIA2+ folks. Her ordination is now with a progressive denomination. She is also a member of the order of Bards, Ovates, and Druids.

Mary is a social justice advocate who is committed to lifting marginalized voices, understanding her own privilege, and doing anti-racist work both privately and publicly.

This work, as well as Mary’s multi-faith approach to ministry, and her willingness to meet people where they are in their spiritual journey complement who we are here at UUFNB.

When asked what people should know about her, Mary said this, “I hope people will see my heart for others and that I seek to lead with compassion in every interaction. I want them to know that I feel so honored to be a part of the incredible UUFNB community. I love my husband and children fiercely. I adore musical theater and I am always looking for opportunities to be creative (and to remind others that they are creative too!). My life’s calling is journeying with people as they return to themselves, discovering their core identity of love, and helping them find freedom from shame and fear.”
