Wordplay and Dad Jokes

As a teen my friends called my humor preacher jokes. I asked them why. They explained that preachers cannot tell ethnic jokes or dirty jokes so all that is left to them is puns.   I find that wordplay can be enlightening. Words have arbitrary and overlapping meanings that sometimes surprise us. Dad jokes have the same problem as Preacher jokes. It is hard to be a good role model and be funny. So mutual enjoyment of the unfunny becomes a joke in itself.
