Our Minister—old
Rev. Cynthia Snavely began serving the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of New Bern in January 2016. She came to the fellowship after serving congregations in Bowie, MD; Columbia, MD; Charleston, WV; and Warrington, PA. She has served as administrator of Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice in the National Capital Region, served on the Prince George’s County, Maryland LGBTQ Youth Task Force and served on the Board of Visitors for Bowie State University. She has volunteered as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate for foster youth and as a police chaplain. She may be contacted at 252-497-2875 or email minister@uufnb.org.
How did Rev. Snavely come to UUFNB?
In the summer of 2016 our minister’s daughter, son-in-law, and four grandsons returned to the States after her son-in-law had been stationed in the Netherlands for three years with the United States Army. Our minister, Rev. Cynthia Snavely, realized that if she waited until she retired to spend time with her grandchildren they would all be grown. With the consent of her daughter and son-in-law she left her ministry in Bowie, Maryland and moved in with her daughter’s family in their new home in Virginia. The plan is to move with the family as the Army moves them.
But Rev. Snavely has a strong call to ministry and sought to continue to serve Unitarian Universalists in some way. The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of New Bern was seeking a part-time minister after many years of depending on its membership for leadership. The fellowship and minister were able to commit to working together. Rev. Snavely spends Thursday through Sunday twice a month (usually the second and fourth Sundays of each month) in New Bern and stays in communication at other times through email, phone and online meetings.
Both Rev. Snavely and the leadership of the fellowship are committed to working together in the time they have together to prepare for whatever comes next for the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of New Bern.
